You want the best for your child. Scheduling a pediatric eye exam is a smart choice and a wonderful first step in ensuring the best care for your child’s eyes and health.
Fun fact: Experts say that 80% of what your child learns in school is presented visually.

Setting your child up with a regular pediatric eye exam yearly starting at 6 months of age will ensure your child starts school — and life — off on the best foot possible.
For young children who have yet to learn the alphabet, our optometrists will conduct vision assessments using symbols instead of a lettered eye chart.
Our optometrists will have your child look straight ahead while the doctor moves their hand left and right until the child can’t see the hand.
Your child will wear a pair of 3D glasses while looking at flashing dots. This test allows our optometrists to measure how well your child’s eyes work together.
The optometrist will ask your child to follow an object with their eyes, so our optometrists can assess eye movement.
The eye doctor will briefly shine a light in your child’s eye to test your child’s pupil reaction and clouding or refractive errors.
The optometrist will engage in a series of short exercises designed to assess your child’s hand-eye coordination.
The optometrist will examine all parts of the eye: eyelids, eye area, cornea, iris, and lens, to look for areas of abnormality or infection.
We recommend budgeting about 45 minutes to an hour for your exam. During the exam, your child may sit on your lap or in the hot seat themselves — whatever is most comfortable for you and your little one.
The pediatric eye exam step-by-step breakdown
Our optometrists will check each eye while your child follows our playful toys and light simulations.
Your child may be asked to identify common objects or have their vision tested with a computerized eye chart.
Older children may be given eye drops that make their vision temporarily blurry. Your optometrist will take a look inside the eye’s structures and assess your child’s eye health.
The optometrist will sit down with you and your child to discuss next steps — and if glasses, contact lenses, or eye care is needed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or other vision issues.
Your friendly WeCare optometrist will want to know about your child’s overall general health. Our staff will ask you about your child’s health history to provide better ocular care and align with your and your general doctor’s health recommendations. You’ll want to mention (if applicable) the following health history items to your WeCare optometrist:
Our WeCare team has over 20 years of experience working with little ones (many on our team have children of their own!).
Coupled with our friendly patient navigator team, our optometrists will carefully consider your child’s comfort every step of the way. Your child is encouraged to let our team know how they’re feeling throughout the exam process.
Our doctor and patient navigator team is dedicated to providing you and your child with nothing less than the best optical care, because at the end of the day, our vision is to help you with yours.

“I brought my mom here for an urgent visit. She had a vitreous detachment. They got us in within an hour, were super friendly, and the doctor was extremely thorough and explained everything really well. While we weren’t there for glasses, my whole family plans on making appointments for regular eye care here. They had a really unique stock of glasses and sunglasses.”

“Honestly, this was the single best eye appointment I’ve ever had. I wore glasses as a kid, hated it, and avoided the eye doc as an adult. At College Hill, I felt like I was the only human on earth that mattered to them. My doc explained the process along the way. I’d recommend him and the practice to everyone! It was a real “human” experience. I’m grateful for that.”

“They were simply the kindest. I had a friend who came over from overseas, and her glasses broke — it was missing a small screw. They were very efficient and kind, and we were very satisfied with the experience. I definitely recommended this place to my friends and neighbors. If you’re looking for a good optics place in PVD, this is it!:)”

“I have been going to this place since I was a child and returned as an adult. The experience was even better than I could remember. I enjoyed the new technology and fast service. The ladies are very helpful. I got my glasses in my fast and they were able to modify my fitting. I love my new glasses. I can see so much better. Thank you all for your help!”
