Glaucoma Treatment and Eye Care

Glaucoma management, treatment, and eye care solutions from expert eye doctors

Glaucoma is considered the “silent blinder” in the eye world. Many patients don’t exhibit symptoms or realize they’re living with glaucoma until permanent vision loss occurs — until it’s too late!

Fortunately, our EyeCare optometrists can help. We diagnose, manage, and treat glaucoma before it causes lasting damage.

Common Types of Glaucoma

Glaucoma afflicts the eye’s optic nerve, the part of the eye that connects to the brain. This insidious disease can lead to the deterioration of the optic nerve, all of which results in blind spots in your field of vision. Glaucoma often develops without any immediate warning signs or visible symptoms. And unfortunately, if gone untreated, this irreversible disease can cause permanent eye damage — and total blindness.

Open-angle glaucoma (the most common type of glaucoma) develops slowly and with no immediate visible signs or symptoms. This type of glaucoma results from the drainage canals inside the eye becoming clogged, all of which causes the eye’s internal pressure to increase. This condition can damage the optic nerve and result in vision loss.

Far less common, but much more dangerous, angle-closure glaucoma causes the angle between the cornea and the iris to narrow or completely close, which means fluid can no longer drain from the inside of the eye. As fluid builds up, the eye’s internal pressure increases, causing extensive damage to the optic nerve. This disease progresses quickly; we advise seeking immediate medical attention to avoid further complications.

Glaucoma usually presents itself as severe pain in the eyes, halos or “rainbows” when looking at lights, and severe headaches. WeCare’s eye doctors can help diagnose which type of glaucoma you’re experiencing.

5 Risk Factors for Glaucoma

While glaucoma can plague anyone, some people are at higher risk of contracting the disease than others. People who exhibit the following 5 risk factors are at higher risk of contracting glaucoma.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people of African descent.

People who are 60 or older are at far greater risk for developing glaucoma.

The saying “it runs in the family” is real. Patients with a family history of glaucoma (or siblings with glaucoma) are more likely to develop the disease.

Those with high pressure in the eyes may be at an increased risk of contracting glaucoma.

The cornea is one of the most affected areas of the eye with glaucoma. People with a thinner cornea have a higher risk of developing glaucoma.

Comprehensive Glaucoma Treatment From Our Eye Doctors

Medicines can help the eye produce less fluid, keep eye pressure at bay, and drain fluid from the eyes.

Glaucoma surgery helps create new openings for fluid to leave the eye. Our eye doctors will help determine if you need surgery and help coordinate a consultation with a glaucoma specialist.
